SALT LAKE CITY -
Utah football coach Urban Meyer received the prestigious Victor Award as the 2004 College Coach of the Year, joining honorees in other sports categories at the 38th-annual City of Hope awards presentation in Las Vegas on July 12. Fox Sports Net is currently airing the awards ceremony nationally.
The honor is the latest for Meyer, who was named The Sporting News' National Coach of the Year and the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year after leading Utah to a 10-2 record, the MWC championship and a Liberty Bowl win over Southern Mississippi in 2003.
Meyer is in good company as a Victor Award recipient. Recent winners of the Victor Award for College Coach of the Year include Miami's Larry Coker in 2003, Oklahoma's Bob Stoops in 2002, Wisconsin's Barry Alvarez in 2001, Tennessee's Philip Fulmer in 2000 and Michigan's Lloyd Carr in 1999. Other past winners were Steve Spurrier, Gary Barnett, Rich Brooks and Bobby Bowden.
Among the other Victor Award winners at the 2004 City of Hope banquet were College Player of the Year Larry Fitzgerald, NFL Player of the Year Ray Lewis and NFL Coach of the Year John Fox.
