SALT LAKE CITY -
The Ute football team conducted its final scrimmage of the preseason in Rice-Eccles Stadium Wednesday but didn't bother to move the chains. Instead, the Utes simulated situations they think they'll face against Texas A&M.
The first-string offense and defense played against scout teams that were running Texas A&M's schemes. "This was the A&M scrimmage," emphasized Utah Head Coach Urban Meyer. "It was all about preparing our team for what they'll see specifically against Texas A&M."
The scrimmage included plays that started on the 30-yard line under different down situations, although the chains were not moved regardless of the result of the play. There were also punt, kickoff and red zone drills.
Although no stats were kept due to the nature of the scrimmage, several big plays stood out. Among them was a 70-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Brian Johnson to speedy walk-on redshirt freshman Derrick Richards. Starting QB Alex Smith connected with junior John Madsen for a 30-yard pass play. Senior running back Marty Johnson had back-to-back runs of 35 and 11 yards and freshman Brent Casteel had a nice 17-yard off-tackle run.
On defense, linebacker Corey Dodds recovered a fumble and linebacker Tommy Hackenbruck had a tackle for loss. Dodds recovered four fumbles as a junior last year, which is the third-best single-season mark ever at Utah.
"The team's come a long way," said Meyer, whose players start classes tomorrow. "The players came back in great shape, which helped us tremendously schematically. Our first string is a salty group, which is good because they are going to have to make a lot of plays. The "two's" just have not developed the way we hoped and I am very concerned about our depth."
