Quickly On Utah
The Runnin' Utes (14-3, 2-0 MWC) conclude their first Mountain West Conference road trip of the season against Colorado State (9-6, 1-1 MWC) on Monday at 6:07 p.m. (MST) at Moby Arena (8,745) in Fort Collins, Colo. The game will be televised on KJZZ-TV 14 in Salt Lake City and broadcast on Hot Ticket 700 (KALL-AM) and the Utah Sports Network. The Utes are 2-2 on opponent's home courts and 4-3 away from home this season.

Utah won its ninth consecutive game and 10th in the last 11 with a 74-49 victory over Wyoming on Saturday afternoon in Laramie, Wyo. Last Monday night in their conference opener, the Utes defeated UNLV 70-52 in Salt Lake City.

Sophomore center/forward Andrew Bogut (7-0, 240) leads the Utes in scoring (19.1 ppg), rebounding (11.5 rpg) and blocked shots (28), and is second in field goal percentage (71.4). Bogut has 11 double-doubles this season to lead the nation. Senior guard Marc Jackson (6-1, 175) is second in scoring (11.9 ppg), hitting 56.9 percent of his three-point attempts (37-of-65) and 83.6 percent of his free throws, and is second in assists (3.2 apg). Junior forward Bryant Markson (6-6, 190) is fourth in scoring (9.7 ppg) and second in rebounding (3.9 rpg). Sophomore forward Justin Hawkins (6-5, 220) is fifth in scoring (8.1 ppg) and third in rebounding (3.5 rpg). Junior guard Tim Drisdom (6-3, 210) leads the Utes in assists (3.4 apg) and has a 2.41 assists to turnover ratio.

As of Jan. 11, the Utes ranked sixth in the NCAA in field goal percentage (52.1), seventh in rebound margin (+10.8) and 20th in scoring defense (58.8 ppg).

From The Training Room
? Sophomore forward Justin Hawkins went out of the Wyoming game on Saturday with a head injury after playing only one minute. He is questionable for the Colorado State game on Monday. Hawkins has been suffering from a sore back since Dec. 28. After being limited to just 13 minutes against Colorado on Dec. 30, Hawkins did not play against LSU or Whitworth. He returned to action against UNLV last Monday, playing 12 minutes.

? Junior forward/guard Richard Chaney broke two bones in his left hand on Dec. 27 in practice and had surgery two days later. He could be out 4-6 weeks. Chaney has started 10 games and played in 11 this season, averaging 11.5 points per game to rank third on the team. He is also averaging 2.7 rebounds in 27.2 minutes per game, and has 17 assists and 10 steals this season.

Scouting The Rams
Colorado State is 9-6 overall and 1-1 in Mountain West Conference play. The Rams broke a two-game losing streak with a 74-67 win over BYU on Saturday afternoon at Moby Arena. Colorado State opened the conference season with a 58-53 loss at Air Force on Jan. 8 after closing out its nonconference schedule with a 78-63 defeat at Pepperdine on Jan. 3. The Rams are 9-0 at home this season.

Senior center Matt Nelson (7-1, 265) ranks eighth in the MWC in scoring (15.5 ppg), seventh in rebounding (6.0 rpg), first in field goal percentage (68.1) and 10th in free throw percentage (76.8). Senior forward Matt Williams (6-6, 215) is questionable for the game due a knee injury. Williams ranks 11th in the conference in scoring (12.5 ppg), tied for 12th in rebounds (5.0 rpg), seventh in field goal percentage (58.8) and fourth in free throw percentage (84.3). Freshman forward Jason Smith (7-0, 225) is 20th in the league in scoring (10.1 ppg), 11th rebounding (5.1 rpg), third in field goal percentage (62.1) and sixth in blocked shots (1.40 bpg). Senior guard Jon Rakiecki (603, 205) is the fourth-best scorer on the team (8.3 ppg) and is 13th in the MWC in assists (2.40 apg).

The Rams rank third in the Mountain West in scoring offense (75.5 ppg), fifth in scoring defense (66.9 ppg), third in rebound margin (+5.5 rpg), third in field goal percentage (50.1), first in field goal percentage defense (38.3) and first in blocked shots (5.80 bpg)

Head Coach Dale Layer
Dale Layer has a 68-67 record in his fifth season at Colorado State and a 235-154 career record in his 14th year as a head coach. He previously served as an assistant coach for two seasons at CSU (1998-2000) and was the head coach for nine seasons at Queens College (1989-98) in Charlotte, N.C.

In 2002-03, Layer led CSU to its first NCAA Tournament since 1989-90. Colorado State went 19-14 overall and placed sixth in the MWC with a 5-9 mark. The Rams also captured their first-ever conference tournament championship to receive the MWC's automatic bid to the NCAAs. They fell to Duke (67-57) in the first round in Salt Lake City. Last season, CSU went 13-16 overall and tied for seventh in the MWC with a 4-10 record.

The Rams' 15 wins under Layer in 2000-01 was the fourth-highest win total by a first-year head coach in school history. Layer built the Division II program at Queens from the ground up and went 168-87 (.659), twice earning NCAA Regional Coach of the Year honors. Layer took Queens College to the national tournament twice and produced eight consecutive winning seasons.

Utah vs. Colorado State Series Notes
? Utah and Colorado State meet for the 132nd time on Monday night. The series dates back to a 41-25 win by Utah on Jan. 2, 1937. The two teams have met every year since 1969-70 with the exception of the 1998-99 season.

? The Runnin' Utes lead the all-time series 92-39 and have won seven of the last eight, including two in a row over the Rams. Colorado State's last win over Utah was 66-65 on March 6, 2003 in the Huntsman Center.

? Utah swept the season series in 2003-04, winning 67-49 on Jan. 19 in Salt Lake City and 80-70 on Feb. 14 in Fort Collins. ? In conference play, Utah has an 84-34 advantage.

? Ray Giacoletti has never faced Colorado State.

? Dale Layer is 2-7 against Utah during his tenure at CSU. In addition to beating the Utes in Salt Lake City during the 2002-03 season, his other win was 73-65 on Jan. 22, 2001 at Moby Arena.

? In Fort Collins, Colo., the Utes are 36-23. The Utes have followed up two consecutive losses with three straight victories, winning 72-62 on Feb. 28, 2002, and 71-66 on Feb. 8, 2003 in addition to last year's win.

Last Meeting
Tim Drisdom scored a career-high 24 points and Nick Jacobson added 22 to lead Utah to an 80-70 victory over Colorado State last season on Feb. 14 at Moby Arena.

Andrew Bogut also had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Utah, which completed a two-game sweep of Colorado State.

Dwight Boatner led Colorado State with 16 points. Micheal Morris had 15 for the Rams, who lost their third straight and played their fourth consecutive game without injured center Matt Nelson.

Jacobson's layup extended Utah's lead to 40-27 two minutes into the second half. The Rams then tightened their defense. A layup and free throw by Morris closed the gap to 42-37.

The Utes responded with a 13-3 run begun by a four-point play to move ahead 55-40 with 6:10 remaining.

Colorado State cut the gap to 75-68 after Ronnie Clark's layup with 1:22 left. The Utes then put the game out of reach by sinking 5-of-6 free throws--three by Jacobson--in the final 1:12.

Drisdom and Jacobson had 11 points each by halftime, and Utah used two runs to lead 34-26 at the break. Colorado State missed its first eight shots, allowing the Utes to build a 12-1 lead. The Rams heated up to hit 6-of-10 shots, cutting the lead to 18-16. Utah regained control and Drisdom buried two three-pointers and scored on a backdoor layup with 2:44 left to put the Utes ahead 30-19.

Tough Trip Along the Front Range
With its 74-49 win at Wyoming on Saturday, Utah is in position to sweep the Colorado State/Wyoming road trip for only the second time since the 1975-76 season.

The Runnin' Utes swept the road trip in 2002-03, winning at Colorado State (71-66) on Feb. 8 and at Wyoming (69-56) on Feb. 10. Before that win against the Cowboys, Utah had lost seven in a row in Laramie with its previous win in the Arena-Auditorium coming on Jan. 28, 1992 (64-45). Utah won at both Colorado State and Wyoming during the 1990-91 season; however, that year the two games were played over a month apart.

Since the berth of the Mountain West Conference, Utah has split the trip twice and been swept twice. In 1999-2000, Utah fell at Colorado State on Feb. 26 (60-49) and at Wyoming on Feb. 28 (88-61). In 2000-01, the Utes lost to the Cowboys on Jan. 20 (78-77 in OT) and the Rams on Jan. 22 (73-65). In 2001-02, Utah split the two-game swing with a 72-62 win at Colorado State on Feb. 28 and a 57-56 loss at Wyoming on March 2 in the game that decided the MWC regular-season championship. Last season, the Utes won 80-70 on Feb. 14 at Colorado State and lost 74-65 on Feb. 16 at Wyoming.

Boasting Of Bogut, Utah's Wooden and Naismith Awards Candidate

Sophomore forward Andrew Bogut (7-0, 240) has been named to the 2004 John R. Wooden Preseason All-America Team and is a preseason candidate for the Naismith Award. Last season, Bogut was honored as the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year, second team all-MWC, and second team All-District 13 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). He also made the CollegeInsider.com all-freshman team.

? Bogut leads the Utes in scoring (19.1 ppg), rebounds (11.5 rpg), blocked shots (28) and steals (21). He is also second in field goal percentage (63.9), third in assists (2.5 apg), and is shooting 71.4 percent from the free throw line. He has led the Utes in scoring 11 times and rebounding 16 times this season.

? Bogut has had double-doubles in 12 of the 17 games this season to rank first in the nation in that category. He has 26 double-doubles in his career. Bogut had a string of seven double-doubles before getting 23 points and eight rebounds in 18 minutes during a blow-out of Whitworth on Jan. 5. The next game, he had 10 points and 15 boards against UNLV on Jan. 10. Bogut had 12 points and eight boards against Wyoming on Saturday, playing just 23 minutes due to first-half foul trouble and a large Utes' lead in the second half.

? Bogut has scored in double figures all 17 games this season, bringing his double-figure scoring streak to 19 consecutive games dating back to last season.

? He has nine 20-point games this season, bringing his career total to 12. He had scored 20 points eight games in a row before getting 10 points against UNLV last Monday.

? In the NCAA statistical rankings released on Jan. 11, Bogut was second in rebounds per game (11.8), 10th in field goal percentage (63.3) and 24th in points per game (19.6).

? Bogut has been at his best in the last 10 games, leading the Utes to a nine-game winning streak after a narrow 67-62 loss at No. 15 Arizona. During that span, he has averaged 21.1 points and 12.7 rebounds in 31.7 minutes per game.

Take Note Of These Utes
? Sophomore forward Jonas Langvad (6-9, 230) had a career-high 19 points in 25 minutes against Wyoming on Saturday, bettering his previous best mark of 11 points against Colorado on Dec. 30. Langvad went 7-for-11 from the field, 4-for-7 from three-point range and 1-for-2 at the line. In the last five games, Langvad has averaged 10.4 points per game. Against LSU on Jan. 3, he had nine points (3-10 FG, 2-5 3FG, 1-2 FT) and two boards in 24 minutes. Langvad put up nine points (1-2 FG, 7-9 FT) in 25 minutes against Whitworth on Jan. 5.

? Junior center Chris Jackson (6-11, 245) has started the last five games. He tied a season high with eight points (4-6 FG) in a season-high 32 minutes against Wyoming on Saturday. He also had five rebounds against the Cowboys, following up a season-best six rebounds versus UNLV last Monday night.

Utah With Best Record In Mountain West Games
The Runnin' Utes have the most wins in league games in the six-year history of the Mountain West Conference. Utah is 52-20 (.722) in MWC games, including 33-3 at home and 19-17 on the road. BYU is second at 45-27 (.625), followed by UNLV and Wyoming at 41-31 (.569). The Utes' road record is also the best in conference history.

Getting Defensive
One of the trademarks of Utah basketball in recent years has been a stifling half-court defense. Since the 1989-90 season, Utah has finished in the top 30 in the nation 12 times in scoring defense, 10 times in rebound margin, eight times in field goal percentage defense and eight times in scoring margin.

? In the NCAA statistical rankings released on Jan. 11, Utah ranked seventh in rebound margin (+10.8 rpg) and 20th in scoring defense (58.8 ppg). Currently, the Utes have a +10.9 rebound margin and are giving up 58.2 points per game to rank first and second, respectively, in the conference in those categories.

? The U. has held each of its last six opponents to under 42 percent shooting from the field and 60 points or less. During the last six games, teams have averaged 50.7 points per game against the Utes while shooting 37.0 percent from the field and 32.0 percent from three-point range. Utah has also held a 38.7 to 22.3 advantage on the boards.

? The Utes have outrebounded the opposition in 14 of the 17 games this season--including the last nine--and had a push in one other game (vs. Stony Brook in the season opener), going 13-1 in those contests. That continues a trend from last season when the Utes outrebounded 30 of 33 opponents.

? Utah has allowed just three opponents to shoot better than 50 percent from the field this season: Washington (53.4 in a loss), Utah State (65.0 in a loss) and Cal Poly (54.5 in a win).

? Utah has not allowed an opponent to score 80 points in 145 consecutive games that have ended in regulation. The last team to score 80 points on the Utes in a 40-minute game was Wyoming (88) on Feb. 28, 2000 in Laramie, Wyo.

Inside The Numbers
Utah is 13-1 when leading at halftime and 14-1 when leading with 5:00 remaining in the second half this season. The U.'s only loss in both of those categories was at Arizona on Dec. 11. ... Utah is 13-1 when holding opponents to less than 70 points per game this season with its only loss coming to Arizona (67-62) on Dec. 11. Utah is 5-0 when limiting a team to under 50 points. ... The Utes are 9-1 when scoring at least 70 points this season and 5-0 when getting 80 points or more. ... Utah has scored over 90 points twice this year: 98 vs. Montana-Western and 92 vs. Cal Poly.
