TUCSON, Ariz. -- Kim Smith recorded her first double-double of the season and Julie Larsen delivered timely, clutch shooting off the bench Saturday night. Along with Marie Warner's 14-point effort, that trio of University of Utah women's basketball players led their team to a 66-63 victory over Arizona at the KcKale Center Saturday night.
Utah trailed 27-24 at halftime. Arizona quickly increased its advantage early in the second half. The Wildcats opened the half with a pair of quick buckets to take a seven-point lead, 31-24. Five minutes into the second half, Utah still trailed by seven, 41-34.
Shauna Brouillard scored with 14:58 remaining in the game to pull Utah within five. Then Larsen entered the game. One minute later, Larsen hit a three-pointer to pull the Utes within two, 41-39. Smith tied the game with 13 minutes left and the two teams traded a pair of baskets to leave the score at 43-43, with 12 minutes to go.
Larsen then hit back-to-back three-pointers on consecutive rips down the floor, pushing the Utah lead to six, 49-43. After a defensive stop, Shona Thorburn found Joh-Teena Filipe streaking toward the basket for a lay-in and the Utes were on top by eight, 51-43. Filipe's bucket capped a 17-2 outburst for Utah in a span of six minutes.
Larsen's fourth trey of the game and the second half put Utah on top by nine, with 7:32 remaining and it looked as though Utah might cruise from there. But Arizona kept clawing back into it. The Wildcats put together an 8-1 run behind four points from Natalie Jones, pulling within 57-55 at the 4:31 mark.
Utah's Marie Warner hit a three-pointer from the left corner to give her team a five-point lead at the four-minute mark. The two teams traded just a pair of buckets each over the next three minutes and Utah led by five, 64-59, with less than one minute to go.
But Smith missed a rare free throw with 31 seconds remaining and Joy Hollingsworth buried a long three-pointer for Arizona at the other end, pulling the Wildcats within two, 64-62, at the 23-second mark. Smith managed to hit two free throws on the Utes' next possession, while Jones hit one of two for the Wildcats with 12 seconds left. That left Utah with a three-point advantage, 66-63.
Warner missed a free throw, giving Arizona one last chance. But Larsen got a finger on Jessica Arnold's last-second three-point attempt from the right corner and preserved the Utah victory. It was the first career blocked shot for Larsen, who has now played in 94 games for Utah.
Smith finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds. She scored 13 points and had nine boards in the first half. Warner tacked on a career-high 14 points in her first start of the season and just the second of her career. Larsen's 12 points off the bench came on her four key second-half treys. Jones scored 17 to lead four Arizona players in double figures.
Utah, now 2-1 on the season, will return home for a matchup with Oregon State Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. It is the beginning of a four-game homestand, The utes' longest of the season.
