ST. GEORGE, Utah - The University of Utah men's golf team finished the first day of the SUU Tournament in third place with a score of 295 (+7) Utah is just two strokes behind Weber State which finished the day at 293 (+5). The University of Denver leads all teams at even par (288). The second round will continue tomorrow, Feb. 15, at the 72- par Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George, Utah.
Junior Steve Newren leads all Ute scorers at 69 (-3) and sits in second place overall behind Denver's Jimmy Cunningham. Cunningham finished the round just one stroke ahead of Newren at 68 (-4). Fellow Ute Nick Micek finished one stroke behind Newren at 70 (-2).
Freshman Dustin Pimm finished the day in a four-way tie for fourth place. Pimm shot a 71 (-1), while senior Ashdon Woods finished the day tied for 33rd after shooting a 77 (+5). Chris Gresh finished one stroke behind Woods (78) to finish tied for 36th place after the first round and freshman Nick Carter finished tied for 38th with a score of 79 (+7). Jake Sowby and Chace Bickmore finished tied for 44th and 48th place respectively.
