SALT LAKE CITY -
The Utah football team opened spring camp Saturday under sunny but occasionally blustery conditions in Rice-Eccles Stadium. Head coach Kyle Whittingham and his staff ran the Utes through 25 periods of non-contact practice.
"I can't get much of a read on where we are after just one day with no gear on," said Whittingham, whose team was dressed in shorts, jerseys and helmets.
As anticipated, sophomore Brian Johnson took the lion's share of the reps at quarterback, where he has been anointed the starter. "Brian is young and inexperienced but he has ability," said Whittingham. "It's a matter of getting him getting confident in the new offensive scheme and getting plenty of reps. But it is Brian Johnson's job to lose," the new Ute head coach confirmed.
Whittingham was pleased with the condition in which the athletes came back after training on their own since the football season ended in January at the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. "The off-season workouts clearly went well. The guys are in as good a shape as they have ever been at this time."
The defense was ahead of the offense, which Whittingham expected. "We have a lot of new faces out here, especially on the offense, and we are installing a new offensive scheme. The defense looked pretty sharp, but we have more experience there and the scheme is the same."
