The Mountain West Conference released the 2005 football schedule today and Utah is already on the docket for two nationally televised games. After starting the season with two non-conference home games, Utah's next two games will be nationally televised league games.
The two-time defending MWC champions, under the direction of first-year head coach Kyle Whittingham, will kick off their 2005 campaign against Arizona on Thursday, Sept. 1. It will be one of three Thursday games in the month of September for the Utes, whose league-opener on Sept. 15 at MWC newcomer TCU will be televised by either ESPN or ESPN2. The following Thursday, Utah will host Air Force in another ESPN/ESPN2 televised contest.
"I'm very pleased with the schedule," said Whittingham. "Playing two nationally televised Thursday games on ESPN is great exposure for the University of Utah. I also really like our non-conference schedule. It's always exciting to play a Pac 10 team and opening the season against Arizona will be great for our fans. Going into ACC territory to play North Carolina will be a terrific experience for our players.
"The timing of the games will be helpful in some cases, especially playing Air Force on a Thursday before we have to make that long trip back east to play North Carolina. The open date seems to come at a good time in the season as we're preparing for the home stretch.
"We're excited to have TCU back in our conference, among other reasons because it will help strengthen our recruiting ties to Texas."
The Utes will open their season on Thursday, Sept. 1 against Arizona in Rice-Eccles Stadium. On Saturday, Sept. 10, Utah will host Utah State in Rice-Eccles Stadium before back-to-back MWC games against TCU (Sept. 15) and Air Force (Sept. 22).
Utah's final non-conference game is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 1 in Chapel Hill, N.C., where the Utes will complete a home-and-away series with North Carolina. The rest of Utah's schedule falls on Saturdays, with home games against San Diego State (Oct. 15), Wyoming (Nov. 5) and New Mexico (Nov. 12) and road games vs. Colorado State (Oct. 8), UNLV (Oct. 22) and Brigham Young (Nov. 19).
Game times and local and regionally televised games are still to be determined.
