SALT LAKE CITY -
Sophomore quarterback Brian Johnson continued to make impressive strides in Saturday's 100-play scrimmage at the McCarthey Practice Fields. Starting on the 30-yard line and in the coming out drills, Johnson completed 14 of 20 passes for 197 yards with no interceptions. He ran for a 15-yard touchdown. Johnson, who completed his first eight pass attempts, led all rushers with 11 carries for 68 yards and a touchdown. The offense also scored on a 30-yard field goal by Dan Beardall.
"I saw good things on both sides of the ball," said Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham, "But I was especially impressed with how Brian Johnson continues to progress. He looked very poised today and he is becoming a team leader."
Mid-year junior college transfer Brian Hernandez caught three passes for 60 yards, including a nice leaping grab over the middle. Sophomore Derrek Richards led all receivers with four catches for 58 yards.
Senior running back Quinton Ganther had three carries for 26 yards and freshman H-back Brent Casteel impressed with three carries for 17 yards and a 12-yard reception.
Backup quarterback Danny Southwick saw a bit of action behind Johnson and was 2-6 passing for 18 yards.
The defense again rested some of its star veterans, but still recorded three sacks, two tackles for loss and four pass breakups. Freshman lineman Pate Moleni broke up two passes. Sacks came from sophomore Martail Burnett, senior Grady Marshall and sophomore Joe Jiannoni.
In the red zone drills, Johnson passed for three touchdowns and ran for another. His last two TD strikes were to Fano Tagovailoa (17 yards) and Brent Casteel (21 yards). He also scored on a 1-yard run, as did Ganther. Beardall made all four PATs in the red zone drills and was 5-5 for the day.
