The Utes are down to their last eight days of full-time football. On August 24, they'll start classes ... Still ahead are three double day practices and two scrimmages ... This week's scrimmage will be mostly of a situational nature ... Practices at Ute Baseball Field are open to the public, but the scrimmages at Rice-Eccles Stadium are closed ... Another game time has been finalized for the coming season. Utah will play Colorado State at 4:30 p.m. in Ft. Collins on October 8. The game will be televised locally on KJZZ.
FRESHMAN FRONTRUNNERS
Given the rate they're moving up the depth chart in camp, freshmen could make an impact in every facet of the game for Utah this fall. The new starter this week for field goals and kickoffs, as well as the co-starter to punt, is freshman Louie Sakoda. Redshirt freshman Brent Casteel, already a member of the starting kickoff return team, is now the co-starter at H receiver. Freshman Kevin Dunn has worked his way into the No. 2 spot at quarterback. In the top five at defensive tackle and cornerback are Kenape Eliapo (No. 3 at nose guard) and Brice McCain (No. 3 at left corner). In Utah's defensive scheme, a top-five place at those two positions virtually ensures playing time.
MOVING THE LINE
A couple of JC transfers are forcing adjustments to the defensive depth chart. Redshirt junior Paul Soliai, who moved from the offensive to the defensive line early in fall camp, is now No. 2 at tackle. New juco transfer Soli Lefiti has pushed ahead of redshirt freshman Pate Moleni at end.
CAMP NOTES
Utah's depth chart at strong safety is in single digits due to injuries to co-backups Antonio Young (bruised knee) and Kawika Casco (hamstring). Young could be back in action sometime this week, but Casco is out until further notice ... Junior wide receiver Rob Gueck, who has been sidelined for the majority of his career at Utah with shoulder problems, has retired from playing after his latest injury. He will continue to receive a scholarship as a medical exemption ... Freshman defensive back Kyler Rushton will miss the entire season after tearing his ACL last week ... Utah plans to add three more walk-ons to its 105-man roster. The intended additions are: tight end Sean O'Connell, who practiced with the team in the spring, linebacker Chet Blasucci and kicker Ben Vroman.
FAN FEST AUGUST 27
The sixth-annual Ute Fan Fest is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 27 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in Rice-Eccles Stadium. The Fan Fest is an interactive event in which all of Utah's 18 varsity athletics teams and coaches participate. Admission and parking are free to the public.
