FORT WORTH, Texas -- The University of Utah women's basketball team dropped a 69-56 decision at TCU's Daniel-Meyer Coliseum Saturday afternoon. A second-half comeback attempt for the Utes fell short before the Lady Frogs pulled away late for the 13-point victory.
Utah led early, taking an 8-4 lead on a Julie Larsen three-point play. But TCU used a 13-3 run over the last four minutes of the first half and led 33-23 at halftime.
Utah was on fire to start the second half. Kim Smith scored back-to-back baskets, followed by a three-pointer from Julie Larsen. That 7-0 spurt to open the second half pulled Utah within three, 33-30, with 17:20 left in the contest.
Four minutes later, Ashley Davis put TCU on top by seven, 43-36, with a three-pointer. But the Utes clawed their way back into it again. Camie Oakey scored four points to key an 8-2 Utah spurt. When Oakey scored with 10:50 remaining, Utah trailed by just one point, 45-44.
The Utes had four possessions with an opportunity to take the lead. Utah turned the ball over on three consecutive possessions and could not get over the hump. For the game, Utah committed 21 turnovers.
Neither team scored for nearly three minutes, until Natasha Lacy hit a pair of free throws with eight minutes remaining. Those freebies sparked a 12-2 TCU spurt, which put the Lady Frogs in control, 57-46, with five minutes to play.
Morgan Warburton and Oakey scored the next two baskets of the game. Those two scored pulled Utah back within seven, 57-50, at the 3:08 mark. But that's as close as the Utes would get. Vanessa Clementino buried a three-pointer from the top of they as the shot clock expired on TCU's next possession, putting her team back on top by 10, 60-50.
TCU hit eight-of-12 from the free-throw line over the final 2:12 to put the victory on ice. The Lady Frogs enjoyed 28 trips to the free-throw line, converting 20. Utah, on the other hand, was only awarded eight free throws and only converted four.
Smith recorded game-high honors with 24 points and 16 rebounds. She tallied her fourth double-double of the season. But Smith was the only Ute in double figures. Lacy led TCU with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Three other Lady Frogs were in double digits, as well.
Utah is back in action again Thursday, hosting Wyoming in a 7 p.m. contest at the Huntsman Center.
