The Runnin' Utes return to the Jon M. Huntsman Center to host San Diego State on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7:05 p.m. (MST). Utah then plays at Colorado State on Saturday, Jan, 14 at 2:05 p.m. (MST).

Quickly On Utah
The Runnin' Utes (8-4, 1-0 MWC) play their first Mountain West Conference road game against the BYU Cougars (8-4, 0-1 MWC) on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. (MST) at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah. The game will be televised by ESPN Regional Television (KJZZ-TV 14 in Salt Lake City) and shown on ESPN Full Court. It will be broadcast on Hot Ticket 700 (KALL-AM) and the Utah Sports Network.

Utah has won four of its last eight games after beginning the season 4-0. The Utes closed out their nonconference schedule with an 80-44 win over High Point on Dec. 28 in the Huntsman Center, then defeated New Mexico 68-49 on Wednesday night in Salt Lake City to open their Mountain West schedule.

Senior forward Bryant Markson (6-7, 198), a preseason all-Mountain West Conference pick, leads the Utes in scoring (15.3 ppg), assists (3.2 apg) and steals (21), and is second in rebounds (5.8 rpg). Markson is shooting 76.0 percent at the free throw line. Sophomore guard Johnnie Bryant (6-0, 190), a junior college transfer in his first season with the Utes, is second on the team in scoring (10.5 ppg) and is averaging 3.3 rebounds per game. Bryant is also shooting 40.4 percent (21-of-52) from three-point range and 91.3 percent from the free throw line. Freshman center Luke Nevill (7-1, 250) is third on the team in scoring (8.7 ppg) and leads the way in rebounding (5.8 rpg). Senior center Chris Jackson (6-11, 245) is fourth in scoring (8.6 ppg) and third in rebounding (4.3 rpg).

Utah ranked 28th in the NCAA in rebound margin (+6.7), 70th in field goal percentage (46.9) and 82nd in scoring defense (63.5 ppg) as of Jan. 3. Currently, the Utes have a +7.1 rebound margin, are shooting 47.1 percent from the field and allowing 62.3 points per game.

? Utah is playing one redshirt freshman and four other newcomers. Through 12 games, 52.4 percent of the Utes' points, 48.9 percent of their rebounds, 55.4 percent of their assists and 55.2 percent of their minutes played have come from the first-year players.

? The Utes are 8-0 when holding their opponents to 68 points or less this season and 0-4 when allowing 69 points or more.

From The Training Room
? Senior guard Tim Drisdom suffered a bone bruise in his left knee on Jan. 2 and has not been able to participate this week. Drisdom is doubtful for the BYU game on Saturday.

Scouting The Cougars
BYU is 8-4 on the season and 6-1 in the Marriott Center. After winning its final two nonconference games over Eastern Washington (97-66) on Dec. 27 and Tulsa (68-49) on Dec. 30 at home, the Cougars dropped their Mountain West Conference opener at Air Force 75-59 on Wednesday night.

Freshman forward Trent Plaisted (6-11, 240) leads the Cougars in scoring (12.9 ppg) while shooting 60.2 percent from the field, and is third in rebounding (4.3 rpg). Senior guard Brock Reichner (6-4, 205) is second on the team in scoring (10.4 ppg) and second in assists (2.5 apg). Reichner is shooting 48.8 percent from three-point range (20-for-41). Junior forward Keena Young (6-6, 205) leads BYU in rebounds (5.9 rpg), while junior guard Rashaun Broadus (6-0, 195) has the top assists total (5.0 apg).

The Cougars rank second in the MWC in scoring (77.2 ppg), eighth in scoring defense (68.2 ppg), sixth in rebound margin (+2.5 rpg) and first in assists (18.08 apg).

Head Coach Dave Rose
After serving as the top assistant at BYU for eight seasons from 1997-2005, Dave Rose is in his first season at the Cougars' head coach. During Rose's tenure under Steve Cleveland, BYU qualified for postseason play five of the past six seasons--including three NCAA bids--while claiming two MWC titles.

Prior to coming to BYU, Rose was head coach at Dixie College in St. George, Utah. Rose compiled a 167-57 record in seven seasons as head coach at Dixie. Rose guided six of his seven teams to national top-20 rankings, including a ranking as high as No. 2, while earning three conference titles.

Rose was a two-sport athlete at Dixie College before transferring to Houston, where he was a shooting guard and co-captain of the famous "Phi Slamma Jamma" team that was ranked No. 1 nationally and finished second in the 1983 NCAA Tournament. At Houston, Rose played in 1980-81, redshirted in 1981-82, and played his final year in 1982-83.

Utah vs. BYU Series Notes
? Utah and BYU have met 239 times. The Utah vs. BYU series ranks 10th among NCAA Division I rivalries in the number of games played.

? The Cougars are the Utes' oldest rivals in a series that dates back to a 32-9 win by BYU on Jan. 23, 1909 in Provo, Utah.

? The Utes lead the all-time series 122-117, winning 20 of the last 24 meetings, six of the last seven and three in a row.

? In Provo, the Cougars lead 65-47. BYU's last win over Utah in the Marriott Center was 70-57 on March 1, 2004. Utah is 2-3 in its last five trips to Provo.

Last Meeting
Andrew Bogut had 26 points and 13 rebounds and Marc Jackson finished with a career-high 11 assists, helping No. 13 Utah beat Brigham Young, 69-60, last season on Feb. 26.

Justin Hawkins added a career-best 21 points for the Utes. He made his first three-pointer of the season to start a 10-point run that put Utah up by 12 midway through the second half.

BYU was able to slow down the Utes early, but couldn't stop them in the second half. Austin Ainge led the Cougars with 17 points and Mike Hall scored 12.

The Cougars also had just 13 assists, only two fewer than Jackson's total, and committed 28 fouls to Utah's 14.

Richard Chaney added 10 points for the Utes, who were 15-for-19 from the floor in the second half and shot 59 percent.

After a 29-all tie at halftime, Utah came out and took control with a 7-2 run to start the second half. Ainge got BYU to 36-35 with back-to-back layups, but Bogut answered with a layup and, after a steal Jackson made a nice no-look pass to Hawkins, who took it in for a dunk.

BYU called time out and came back with a three-pointer by Hall to cut Utah's lead to 40-38, then Hawkins' first three-pointer of the year sparked a 10-point run for the Utes. Bogut was wide open and made a three-pointer. He was pumping his right arm after hitting the long shot, then had to turn around right away after another steal by Utah.

The Utes got the ball to Bogut again and he hit a layup to put the Utes up 50-38 and drew a foul. Bogut missed on the three-point play opportunity, but the Utes were in control and didn't let the Cougars get closer than five the rest of the game.

Markson Makes His Mark
Senior forward Bryant Markson (6-7, 198) was a pre-season all-Mountain West Conference pick. Markson leads the Utes in scoring (15.3 ppg), assists (3.2 apg) and steals (21), and is second in rebounds (5.8 rpg). Markson is shooting 76.0 percent at the free throw line. Markson has reached double figures in scoring in 16 of the last 19 games dating back to last season, including 11 games this year.

? Markson had a career-high 24 points against New Mexico on Wednesday night. He shot 10-for-13 from the field, 3-for-4 from three-point range and made his only free throw attempt. Markson also had eight rebounds in 37 minutes. It was Markson's second career 20-point game after scoring 20 against Colorado State on Jan. 17, 2005.

? He scored in double figures in nine consecutive games to begin the season. After missing that mark two consecutive games, he had 24 points against New Mexico for his 36th career double-figure scoring game.

? Markson had a career-high seven assists against High Point on Dec. 28.

? He had a solid performance against No. 24 Arizona on Dec. 17 with 19 points (8-13 FG, 1-2 3FG, 2-3 FT) in 36 minutes. He also had eight rebounds, three steals and two assists.

? Markson had a career-high nine rebounds against Southern Utah on Dec. 10.
