SALT LAKE CITY -- University of Utah sophomore punter/placekicker Louie Sakoda has been named to the official watch list of the Ray Guy Award, given annually to the best punter in college football.
Sakoda is one of just eight underclassmen (freshmen or sophomores) on the list.
Sakoda has punted 38 times for the Utes so far this season. He is averaging 43.7 yards per punt. Fifty percent (19) of his punts have been downed inside the opponent's 20-yard line. In addition, opponents are averaging just 2.8 yards per return against Sakoda and the Utes' punt coverage team. Sakoda has a long punt of 75 yards this season.
"Punting is more than just kicking the ball 50-60 yards," Ray Guy said when talking about the award named after him. "It's also about helping your team out by putting the ball inside the other team's 20. My main goal is to make sure that the punter is recognized as a team player and a vital part of winning."
The Ray Guy Award national selection committee of approximately 200 sports writers, sportscasters, football coaches, professional football punters, former punters, and previous winners will select the winner. Guy suggested voters base their decision on total average; number of punts placed inside the opponents 20 yard line; and net average.
The Ray Guy Award will be awarded by the Greater Augusta Sports Council in December.
