SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's basketball team is 0-2 to begin a season for the first time since 1993. The Utes dropped a 61-55 decision to Fresno State in their home opener Monday night at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Utah had better numbers than the Bulldogs in almost every phase of the game, but one -- turnovers. The Utes turned the ball over 23 times, giving Fresno State too many opportunities down the stretch.
Utah took a 53-52 lead when Heidi Carlsen (Sr., St. George, Utah) buried a three-pointer from the left corner. But the Utes turned the ball over on two of their next three possessions, allowing Fresno State to score four straight points and take a 56-53 lead.
After a Tierre Wilson free throw for Fresno State, Utah's Joh-Teena Filipe (So., Salt Lake City) hit a jumper with nine seconds remaining to pull her team within two, 57-55. But the Bulldogs salted the game away at the free throw line, hitting 4-of-4 in the final eight seconds.
Morgan Warburton (So., Helper, Utah) scored a team-high 18 points for Utah, including 3-of-4 from behind the three-point arc. Filipe finished with 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Halie Sawyer (Fr., Panguitch, Utah) tallied nine points, as did Carlsen. Fresno State was paced by Chantella Perera, who scored a game-high 23 points and was 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. Andrea Roberson added 16 for the Bulldogs, while Wilson tacked on 13.
Utah struggled offensively early in the contest. The Utes turned the ball over on their first three possessions and missed their first eight field-goal attempts. Fortunately for Utah, Fresno State wasn't faring much better. After hitting their first two shots to take a 5-0 lead, the Bulldogs went scoreless for nearly six minutes. Seven minutes into the game, only nine points had been scored with the Bulldogs holding a 5-4 advantage.
Fresno State opened up a lead of four points twice in the first half, but could not pull away from the Utes, who shot just 28.6 percent in the first 20 minutes. At the intermission Utah trailed the Bulldogs 25-22.
The second half was back-and-forth for the first 5:32. With 14:28 remaining, the contest was knotted at 37-37. Fresno State's Perera scored seven straight points to spark a 9-0 spurt, giving the Bulldogs a 46-37 lead with just less than 12 minutes remaining. Utah responded with a 13-1 run of its own, grabbing a 50-47 advantage. Fresno State answered with five straight points to go up 52-50.
Utah will be back in action again Friday night, when the Utes travel to Orem, Utah for a 7 p.m. matchup with Utah Valley State College.
