SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's basketball team struggled at times Friday night at the Huntsman Center. But the Utes still managed to subdue Long Beach State and take a 66-43 victory in non-conference action.
Utah (3-4) was paced by Joh-Teena Filipe (Soph., Salt Lake City) and Brette Ulsaker (Fr., McPherson, Kan.). Filipe led the team in scoring and rebounding with 12 points and seven boards. Ulsaker scored the first 10 points of her collegiate career. She also dished out a game-high seven assists.
Utah held a 29-24 advantage at the intermission, but outscored the 49ers 37-19 in the second half to pull away for the 23-point win. With the Utes leading 34-29 three minutes into the second half, Ulsaker hit the second of her two three-pointers. That trey sparked a 13-2 run, putting Utah in control. Halie Sawyer capped the spurt with a bucket in the paint nearly six minutes later and Utah led 47-31.
Long Beach State pulled back within 12 points, 49-37, when Lauren Sims hit a three-pointer at the 7:52 mark. But the Utes answered, putting the game out of reach with a 14-1 run over the next six minutes. Filipe scored six points during the Ute outburst, which also included a three-pointer from Jessica Perry (Jr., Guelph, Ont.). A pair of Kalee Whipple (Fr., Hiko, Nev.) free throws ended the run and gave Utah its largest lead of the night, 63-38, with 1:53 remaining.
Although Utah clamped down on the 49ers in the second half, it was Long Beach State who opened the contest on a roll. The Beach scored the first six points of the contest, while the Utes missed their first seven shots. After falling behind 6-0, Utah outscored Long Beach State 20-2 over a nine-minute span. Heidi Carlsen (Sr., St. George, Utah) got the Utes going with a pair of three-pointers early in the big scoring run.
Utah had turned the ball over just three times in the first 12-plus minutes and grabbed a 20-8 lead in the process. But over the final 5:46 of the first half, the Utes committed six turnovers, allowing the 49ers to climb back into the contest. A 7-0 Long Beach spurt trimmed Utah's lead to five, 25-20. Utah led 29-22 and had possession with less than 15 seconds remaining in the first half. But the last of 12 first-half giveaways turned into a fast break bucket for Long Beach State's Tyresha Calhoun, accounting for Utah's five-point edge at the intermission.
Utah held the 49ers to just 6-of-21 shooting (28.6 percent) in the second half. Long Beach managed to shoot just 34.0 percent for the game. The Utes converted at 48.0 percent for the contest, hitting 24-of-50 attempts. Utah also dominated the glass, out-rebounding the 49ers 38-25.
Long Beach State was led by Kaiti O'Brien, who scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Calhoun was the only other 49er in double figures, scoring 10 points.
Utah is back in action again at 7 p.m. Monday night, hosting the USC Women of Troy at the Huntsman Center.
