Whipple Named MWC Co-Player of the Week

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah freshman forward Kalee Whipple and New Mexico senior guard Julie Briody have been named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Co-Players of the Week. It marks Briody's third career honor, while Whipple earns her first.
A true freshman, Whipple scored a career-high 22 points against USC after averaging 7.6 ppg in her previous seven games. She went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe in the final 32 seconds against the Trojans to secure the win. The Hiko, Nev., native also grabbed 10 rebounds in the game for her second career double-double. In just 17 minutes against Arizona, Whipple landed nine points, shooting 50 percent (3-for-6) from the field. She hit two free throws with five seconds left to seal the Utes' 66-60 win.
For the week, Whipple was 9-for-18 from the field and 4-for-9 from beyond the arc, averaging 15.5 ppg. She hit 9-of-10 free throws and had 14 rebounds and four assists.
Briody, from Lynnville, Ind., posted a career-high 25 points in just 29 minutes at Arizona last Tuesday, shooting 8-for-14 from the field and 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. She was then named the Most Valuable Player of the Southwest Airlines Lobo Shootout after leading New Mexico to wins past Sam Houston State and UCLA. She netted 15 points against the Bearkats, while tying her career high with eight rebounds. Against the Bruins, Briody went on her own 7-0 run in a 1:45 span to turn a 54-53 Lobo lead into a 61-53 gap, which they never relinquished.
For the week, Briody averaged 19.0 ppg and 6.0 rpg, while staying perfect from the free throw line at 14-for-14, improving her free-throw percentage for the season to 96.3 percent.
