Filipe Leads Utah Women Over Montana State, 66-63

SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah sophomore Joh-Teena Filipe (Salt Lake City) scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Ute women over Montana State 66-63 Monday night at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Utah (6-5) held a six-point advantage at halftime, after a ragged first half from both teams. With 13:27 remaining in the game Montana State's Brandie Buckless pulled the Bobcats within three, 38-35 with a three-pointer. The Utes answered with a 9-2 run, sparked by four points from Filipe. That spurt gave Utah its biggest lead of the night, 47-37.
Montana State (5-5) responded with an 8-1 run, capped by an Alyssa Nelson triple, to again bring the Bobcats within three, 48-45. Utah pushed its advantage back to seven on a pair of free throws from Morgan Warburton (Soph., Helper, Utah) and a layup from Jessica Perry (Jr., Guelph, Ont.) with just more than seven minutes remaining. Once again, the Bobcats battled back into it. MSU shot better than 60 percent for much of the second half.
Whitney Connolly hit a three-pointer for the Bobcats with seven minutes remaining to spark a 10-2 Montana State spurt. Buckless' jumper with 3:58 left finally gave the Bobcats the lead, 55-54. Perry tied it up with a free throw at the other end. The two teams traded scores, leading to a 61-61 tie with less than one minute remaining.
Utah forced a miss Erica Perry at the 30-second mark. As the Utes secured the rebound, Halie Sawyer (Fr., Panguitch, Utah) was fouled. Sawyer made both free throws to put Utah up 63-61. The Utes played good defense at the other end, forcing a miss from MSU's Alyssa Nelson. Brette Uslaker (Fr., McPherson, Kan.) grabbed the carom and was quickly fouled. Ulsaker scored the first of her two free throws, but the miss was grabbed by Utah's Kalee Whipple (Fr., Hiko, Nev.), who had six offensive rebounds
Whipple was fouled with 16 seconds left and iced the contest by converting both of her attempts. The two freebies put Utah on top 66-61. Montana State's Whitney Connolly hit a jumper at the buzzer to account for the final score.
In the first half, neither team scored for the first 4:49 of the contest. There were 11 turnovers before either team hit a field goal. Midway through the half, Montana State had opened a 10-7 advantage. With Utah trailing 19-17 late in the half, Filipe took over in the paint. She scored six straight points from point-blank range to give Utah a 23-19 advantage. A pair of free throws from Hennasea Tokumura (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) gave the Utes their six-point halftime lead.
Warburton added 14 points to go along with Filipe's 24-point effort. They were the only Utah players in double figures. Whipple grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Connolly came off the bench to tally 18 points, leading Montana State. Nelson added 14 for the Bobcats.
Utah is in action again Wednesday at Noon, hosting Northwestern University at the Huntsman Center.
