PROVO, Utah - The University of Utah women's basketball handed No. 18 BYU its first Mountain West Conference loss Wednesday night at the Marriott Center. Senior Kim Smith (Mission, B.C.) scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Utes to a 70-52 win.
The victory for Utah (16-5, 7-3 MWC) avenged a buzzer-beating, 61-60 loss to the Cougars back on Jan. 7 at the Huntsman Center.
BYU (19-2, 9-1) took a 12-4 lead early in the game behind seven points from Ambrosia Anderson in the first six minutes. But the Utes answered. Utah outscored BYU 26-8 over the next 10 minutes, grabbing a 30-20 advantage with 4:21 remaining in the first half. Ute junior Heidi Carlsen (St. George, Utah) scored all nine of her first half points, including two three-pointers, during the outburst.
Utah led by 11 with 2:26 remaining in the first half, when Smith hit a triple. But BYU scored the final six points of the half, including five from Anderson. That pulled the Cougars back to a 33-28 deficit at the intermission.
Anderson scored again on the first possession of the second half, pulling BYU back within three. But that's as close as the Cougars would get. Utah scored 11 points, compared to just four for BYU, over the next nine minutes, grabbing a 44-34 advantage midway through the second half. Senior Julie Larsen (Sr., Logan, Utah) hit a three-pointer to spark the rally, while Smith scored the final four points of the run.
The Cougars pulled within seven, 44-37, when Anderson scored with 9:24 left. But the Utes put together an 11-1 run to take control of the contest. Freshman Morgan Warburton (Price, Utah) hit a pair of three-pointers during the spurt, which put Utah up 55-38 with just more than six minutes left to play.
The Utes still led by 11 with under four minutes to play. Utah hit 11-of-14 at the free-throw line in the final 3:20 to ice the victory.
Smith's 21 points and 11 rebounds accounted for her sixth double-double of the season and the 30th of her career. It was also her third double-double in the last four games. Smith has also scored 20 or more points 11 times this season and 34 times in her Utah career.
Ute senior Shona Thorburn (Hamilton, Ont.) scored 13 points, dished out a game-high eight assists and pulled down seven rebounds. Warburton scored 12 points and tallied a career-high eight boards. Carlsen tacked on 11 points for Utah. BYU was paced by Anderson's game-high 24 points. Lauren Riley recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Cougars.
The Utes are back in action again Saturday in a 3 p.m. matinee with San Diego State at the Huntsman Center.
