SALT LAKE CITY - Ute senior defensive back Eric Weddle has been named a first team preseason All-American and the No. 1 strong safety in the nation by The Sporting News' 2006 National College Football Yearbook. The publication will go on sale in June.
Weddle, a 6-0, 200-pound native of Alta Loma, Calif., was also named TSN's preseason Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Senior wide receiver Brian Hernandez made the preseason all-MWC team and defensive tackle Joe Faifili was named the Newcomer of the Year.
Weddle is the reigning MWC Defensive Player of the Year. Last season, splitting his time between cornerback and safety, he had 78 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, four sacks, four interceptions (one for a touchdown) and 12 pass breakups.
