SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah head women's basketball coach Elaine Elliott has announced the transfer of Leilani Mitchell (Kennewick, Wash.) to the Ute program.
Mitchell, a 5-foot 5-inch point guard, comes to Utah from the University of Idaho, where she played three seasons. She will sit out the 2006-07 season, as per NCAA transfer rules, and play her senior season with the Utes in 2007-08. Mitchell was an honorable mention All-America selection by both the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and the Associated Press last season. She was also one of 11 finalists for the Nancy Lieberman Award, given to the nation's top point guard.

"It will be great to have Leilani's experience in our program for this coming season to help in the development of our young team and our young point guards," Elliott said. "Obviously, her skills and abilities will blend in well with the age and progress of our team over the next two years."
Mitchell said she was excited about playing for Elliott and the Utes.
"Playing for the University of Utah is something that I am really excited about," Mitchell said. "It is a good situation and a quality program that is well established. I couldn't ask for a better place to finish out my career. The coaches are great. They are both fun and very knowledgeable and I know that I will benefit greatly from playing under their direction."
In addition to Mitchell's statistics from last year, she also left a lasting impression on the Idaho and WAC record books. She owns the Idaho record for career steals (323) and three-pointers made in a game (7, 12/8/05 vs. Utah Valley State). She is also in the top 10 of four single-season categories and five Idaho career top 10 lists. In the WAC, Mitchell is on four top 10 lists. She owns the conference record for single-season steals per game and is tied for the top spot in single-season steals.
Leilani is the daughter of Dennis and Ellie Mitchell, who reside in Kennewick, Wash.
