SALT LAKE CITY - Kalee Whipple (Fr., Hiko, Nev.) and Marie Warner (Jr., Hamilton, Ont.) combined for 41 points off the bench for the University of Utah women's basketball team Saturday afternoon. The reserve duo led the Utes to an 80-59 win over the Air Force Academy at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Whipple scored a career-high 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including 2-of-4 from three-point range. She was also 6-of-6 at the free-throw line. Warner tallied 17 points, which included 2-of-3 from behind the three-point arc and a 9-of-10 performance at the charity stripe.
A huge run to end the first half gave the Utah (13-6, 6-0 MWC) some breathing room, after Air Force (4-13, 0-6 MWC) hung with the Utes for the first 15 minutes. The Falcons even held leads on two occasions in the first period. But a pair of Andrea Taylor free throws with 5:42 left in the first half were the last points Air Force would score in the opening 20 minutes.
At that point, Utah was clinging to a 26-24 advantage. But Warner and Whipple took over the remainder of the half. Four straight free throws from Warner sparked a 14-0 run, which also included back-to-back three-pointers from Whipple. Whipple scored eight points in the outburst, while Warner accounted for the other six. By the intermission, the Utes had a 16-point advantage, 40-24.
Air Force pulled within 14 points twice in the second half, but could get trim its deficit no further. The first time the Falcons pulled that close, Morgan Warburton (So., Helper, Utah) answered with a long three-pointer. That triple sparked a 7-0 spurt that gave the Utes a 21-point lead, 51-30. Utah still led by 20 midway through the second half. But Air Force outscored the Utes 12-6 over a four-minute span to pull within 14 again, 67-53, with 5:16 remaining.
This time, it was Warner who responded with a three-pointer, snuffing out any slim chances of a Falcon comeback. Utah opened up a lead of 23 points, 80-57, when Whipple hit a jumper with 1:44 remaining. From there, the only other scores were a pair of Alecia Steele free throws for Air Force.
Warburton was the only Ute starter in double figures, going for 13 points. Joh-Teena Filipe had another strong performance on the boards, pulling down nine rebounds in just 24 minutes. As a team, Utah hit 30-of-33 free throws in the contest, converting at a rate of 90.9 percent.
Air Force was led by 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds from Steele. Letricia Castillo tallied 13 points, including three triples for the Falcons.
Utah is off until next Saturday, when BYU comes calling at the Huntsman Center. Tipoff for that game, which will be aired on the mtn., is slated for 1 p.m.
