SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team completed their home opener on Saturday against the Utah State Aggies. The Utes won the match 5-2 over the in-state rivals.

The Utes earned the doubles point after sweeping all three spots. Wes Hancock and Timmy Allin played at No.1 against Hannes Schenk and Dantley Young from Utah State. As the first time competing together, the Ute duo shut down the Aggies 8-3.

Freshmen Jason Smits and Othman Ouariti took on USU's Jonas Tyden and Oscar Ericsson in the No. 2 spot. The Aggie duo challenged the Utes, but the Ute duo prevailed for a 9-7 win. Another freshman duo Amit Maharaj and Ryan Schlachter teamed up to play at the No. 3 spot. They faced established Aggie players Mike Banks and Fernando Gallegos. The Ute duo played well for an 8-4 victory over their opponents.

The Utah State Aggies challenged the Utes on Saturday in singles play, but Utah was able to shut down four of the six matches to take the overall win 5-2 over the Aggies.

Hancock made his first appearance at the No. 1 spot for Utah, facing one of USU's top players, Schenk. The two went point-for-point in the first set with Hancock sliding out with a 7-6 win. The Aggie answered back with a 6-3 win over the Ute in the second set. The tie-breaker was exhausting, but in the end, it was an exciting moment for the Utes when Hancock ended the set and match 7-6, 3-6, 11-9.

Maharaj also had a great match today against Banks at the No. 6 spot for the Utes. The Ute freshman fought hard against the Aggie to take the match 6-2, 6-4 over Banks. Maharaj was one of the key matches for the Utes in singles play on Saturday.

"Today's match against Utah State was a great team effort. It was a great way to start the season and see how much we have improved since back in the fall. We started five freshmen today, which have all made great strides since the fall. We've been working really hard on our doubles and its good to see everything coming together."
