Tate Nominated for Draddy Trophy

SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah safety Steve Tate has been named a semifinalist for the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Draddy Trophy. The NFF's top honor is given to the athlete that is successful on the field, and in the classroom and community.
Tate, a senior majoring in economics, owns a 3.348 cumulative grade-point average. He's earned Dean's List Honors four times with a GPA of 3.5 or better, and he has been named to the Athletics Academic Honor Roll five times with a 3.0 or better. Tate is also a two-time academic all-conference selection.
A team captain, Tate's 51 total tackles and 8.4 tackles per game leads the Utes and ranks fourth in the league. He also has 3.5 tackles for a loss and a pass breakup this season.
Tate is involved with the Boy Scouts as a scout leader, coaches youth football teams, and visits schools to talk about the importance of education, among other activities in the community.
Semifinalists must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2, have outstanding football ability as a first-team player, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The winner receives a $25,000 post-graduate scholarship.
The NFF Awards Committee will select and announce up to 15 finalists on Oct. 25. The Draddy winner will be named at the NFF's Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 4 in New York City.
