THIS WEEK: PAT HICKS INVITE
The Utes will kick off their spring campaign Feb. 12-13 in St. George, Utah, at the third-annual Pat Hicks Invitational, hosted by Southern Utah University. Competing for Utah will be Dustin Pimm, Chris Gresh, Nicolas Larson, Steven Broker and Chance Cota. Jeff Kitches will compete as an individual.
The 36-hole tournament will be held at Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George, Utah. Eighteen holes will be played on Monday and Tuesday and a practice round will be held Sunday. Host Southern Utah is the defending champion, Denver won the inaugural tournament in 2005. Eighteen schools will participate in this year's invitational, including in-state rivals Weber State, UVSC, Utah State and Dixie State.
"It's been a long winter and we're excited about going to play again," head coach Randall McCracken said. "We've been utilizing our practice facilities but there's nothing like playing in a tournament."
Last spring, Utah finished fifth at this event, led by then-sophomore Dustin Pimm. Pimm's three-under 69 in the final round earned him eighth place overall.
FALL SEASON WRAP-UP
Utah concluded its fall season Oct. 23-24 at the Barona Cup in San Diego, Calif. The fall campaign was highly successful, with the team garnering a second-place finish at the Wolf Pack Classic and tying for first at the Purple and Red Invitational. Junior Dustin Pimm continued his impressive play, winning the individual title at the Wolf Pack Classic and finishing second at the Purple and Red Invite. Due to a bulging disk in his back, Pimm was held out of the final two tournaments of the year.
"We had a pretty good fall, and the season went well overall," coach McCracken said. " We've got to be pleased with how we've moved up in the rankings, even though we've played the past couple tournaments without Dustin."
Junior Nicholas Larson also performed well throughout the fall campaign. The Riverton, Wyo. native finished five-under-par at the District 7 Shootout in Las Vegas, tying him for seventh place. Larson also enjoyed a ninth-place finish at the Nevada Wolf Pack Classic, finishing at four-under-par.
