Utah Golf Notes: Cowboy Classic Preview

THIS WEEK: WYOMING COWBOY CLASSIC
The Utes will travel to Scottsdale, Ariz. April 9-10, to compete in the Cowboy Classic, hosted by the University of Wyoming. The 54-hole tournament will be held at the Talking Stick Golf Club. Defending team champion New Mexico will not compete, but Mountain West Conference foes Air Force and Wyoming will participate.

Utah will look to improve on their 19th-place finish in this tournament a year ago. Last season, Dustin Pimm paced the team with a 32nd-place finish, after firing a 69 in the final round. Former Ute Steve Newren was the 2005 Cowboy Classic champion.

LAST WEEK: RON MOORE INVITATIONAL
The University of Utah golfers saved their best for last, turning in their best round of the tournament in Tuesday's final round to finish fifth in the team standings. Pacing the Utes was junior Steve Broker, who turned in scores of 68, 70 and 68 to finish fourth overall at 10-under-par, the best finish by a Ute golfer this spring. Dustin Pimm and Nicholas Larson turned in identical overall scores, finishing at two-over-par. Utah's two other competitors, Chance Cota and Chris Gresh, also had identical scores, finishing tied for 47th. All five Ute golfers placed in the top 50. Wichita State won the tournament with a three-round total of 831, finishing at nine-under-par. Nebraska, Kansas State and Denver (who tied for third place), also finished in front of Utah in the 17-team event. Utah was the top finisher among Mountain West Conference schools in the tournament, finishing ahead of Air Force, Colorado State and Wyoming.

UTAH GOLF NOTES
Utah is currently ranked 97th by Golfweek ... The Utes are 95th in the Golfstat men's college golf poll ... Utah will compete in Arizona for the second tournament in a row ... Dustin Pimm is 11th in the Mountain West in stroke average ... Five Utah golfers are in the MWC top 30 in stroke average ... Utah has finished in the top five in three of its four spring tournaments.
