SALT LAKE CITY - Phil Steele's 2007 College Football Preview named 15 Utah football players to its preseason all-Mountain West Conference teams, including seven on the first team.
Selected for first-team honors were quarterback Brian Johnson, running back Matt Asiata, offensive tackle Jason Boone, defensive tackle Gabe Long, free safety Steve Tate, punter Louie Sakoda and kick returner Brice McCain. Sakoda also made the third team as a kicker.
Landing spots on the second team were wide receiver Brent Casteel and linebacker Joe Jiannoni. Earning third-team recognition were wide receiver Marquis Wilson (also an honorable mention punt returner) and defensive lineman Martail Burnett. Center Kyle Gunther and offensive guard Robert Conley won honorable mention accolades.
The publication ranked individual units on the team as well. It listed Utah's quarterback unit as the 25th-best in the nation while the Utes' special teams unit ranked No. 9.
Eight Utes also ranked in the nationally at their respective positions. They were Sakoda (No. 9 in punting), Johnson (No. 25 at quarterback), Tate (No. 27 among free safties) Asiata (No. 34 of the running backs), Boone (No. 44 among offensive tackles), Long (No. 52 among defensive tackles), Jiannoni (No. 40 of the inside linebackers) and Casteel (No. 64 at wide receiver).
