Two-a-day practices are in full swing as the Utah football team begins its third week of fall camp ... The Utes will practice twice on Monday, Aug. 13 and hold their second scrimmage in five days on Tuesday, Aug. 14 ... Please see the left column for this week's practice and scrimmage times and locations ... All practices and scrimmages are closed to the public, but open to the media.
BOONE OUT FOR THE SEASON
The Utes suffered a big blow on Aug. 9 when preseason all-conference offensive tackle Jason Boone tore his ACL in a non-contact drill. Boone, who would have been a senior, started the last two years at right tackle before moving over to the critical left tackle position in the spring. He used a redshirt year in 2003.
TRADING PLACES
The season-ending knee injury to starting left tackle Jason Boone had a ripple effect throughout the team. Moving over to the offensive line from the defense were sophomore Zeke Tuinei-Wily and junior Nano Tonga. Tuinei-Wily made the two-deep his first day at his new job as the backup to right tackle Dustin Hensel. Junior Corey Seiuli, who was No. 2 at right tackle before Boone's injury, was moved to the left side, where he is battling for the starting job with redshirt freshman Walter Watts.
INSIDE THE HUDDLE
Six walk-ons have been awarded scholarships. Kicker Ben Vroman, linebacker Kepa Gaison and defensive end Greg Newman were all on the team last year. All three are currently in the two-deep. Vroman will kick off for the second straight year and Newman is slated to start at right end. New walk-ons awarded scholarships in camp include defensive back Terrell Cole, offensive lineman Jordan Nelson and defensive back Chaz Walker ... Freshman defensive end Nai Fotu received the go-ahead from the NCAA Clearinghouse and reported to practice on Saturday, Aug. 11 ... Robert Johnson will stick to safety now, after splitting his time initially between safety, corner and nickel back. Johnson could also see time as a wide receiver ... Josh Broughton is back at corner after trying out at safety ... Out for the season with a torn ACL is walk-on freshman receiver A.J. Reilly ... Second string right guard Zane Taylor missed last Friday's scrimmage and Saturday's practices due to a concussion ... Running back Matt Asiata (foot) is off crutches and his playing status is day-to-day ... Starting free safety Steve Tate is now six weeks out of hernia surgery and could begin a gradual progression into contact drills as early as this week ... Changes in the defensive two-deep last week included the addition of Paul Kruger at left end, Lei Talamaivao at nose tackle and Cole at nickel back ... Utah's receiving corps has been dubbed the Six Pack. The Six Pack includes starters Derrek Richards, Brent Casteel and Brian Hernandez, and frequently used backups Freddie Brown, Marquis Wilson and Bradon Godfrey.
