SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah punter Louie Sakoda has been named to the Ray Guy Award watch list which honors the top collegiate punter in the country.
Sakoda, who was the preseason Mountain West Conference Special Teams Player of the Year, earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors after his efforts against UCLA. He totaled five punts against the Bruins, four of which were pinned inside the 20-yard-line. He had one of those four punts downed on the three, while his fifth punt went for a touchback.
A top-10 finalist for the award last season, Sakoda is off to a great year. He currently is averaging 44.0 yards per punt, which ranks third in the Mountain West Conference and 19th in the nation. Of his 23 punts thus far, only five have been returned. He has placed 11 punts inside the 20-yard-line, five of which have been downed inside the five.
The Ray Guy Award watch-list will be narrowed to ten semi-finalists, to be announced in early-November. The national voting body will then vote for the top three finalists who will be announced at the end of November. The award will be presented live on ESPN December 6, 2007 during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
