SALT LAKE CITY - Wednesday night's contest wasn't for the faint-of-heart as the University of Utah women's basketball team (15-3, 4-0 Mountain West) erased New Mexico's 14-point lead in the last eight minutes to rally for the 60-57 league win here tonight.
The Utes trailed the entire first half as the visitors took the 31-23 lead into halftime. That seven-point Lobo lead ballooned to 14 points, 52-38, with 7:53 left in the game. But, it was all Utah from that point on. The team shot a meager 34 percent leading up to its 14- deficit. But it turned it around in going 5-for-6 from the field and 6-for-8 from the line in the last eight minutes. It all led to a 22-5 game-ending run as Utah rallied for the three-point win.
The home team came out cold, knocking shots down at paltry 34.6 percent in the first half. The second-half rally centered around a much-improved shooting effort (45.8 percent) as Utah finished the game scoring at a 40-percent (20-for-50) clip for the night.
It was Kalee Whipple who keyed the Utes to victory tonight. She poured in 10 of the team's final 17 points in staging Utah's rally past the Lobos (10-8, 2-3 MWC). It was Utah's 10th straight win.
Whipple finished with 18 points (7-for-12 from the floor) on the night, and 14 of those tallies came in the second half. Whipple also tied for game-high honors with seven boards, and she dished out four assists.
Morgan Warburton led the Utes, though, tallying her usual double-digit scoring numbers with a game-high 19 points. She also had five rebounds and a game-high five steals. Leilani Mitchell was also big in the victory, scoring 12 points and dishing out seven assists.
It was Mitchell's four free throws with under-34 seconds remaining that turned it into a two-possession lead for Utah. The Utes led 56-52 after her four freebies, equaling Utah's biggest lead of the night.
The Lobos' size enabled them to dominate the glass, 38-29, but they couldn't maintain their 40 percent scoring clip from the first half. Utah limited UNM to just 37 percent shooting in the second half as the Lobos settled for a 39.2 (20-for-51) shooting effort for the game.
Whipple led the Utes under the glass, but Katie King chipped with six boards of her own. UNM's Dionne Marsh and Eileen Weissmann each had seven caroms tonight.
Amy Beggin led all Lobo scorers, tallying a team-best 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting.
Utah returns to the hardwood on Saturday when it plays at TCU. Tipoff in the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum is set for 2 p.m. (CT).
