SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (67) will be hosting in-state rivals Weber State and Utah State on Saturday at Eccles Tennis Center. The first serve of the day will be hit at 12:00 p.m. as the Utes face the Wildcats. The tentative match start time against Utah State is 5:00 p.m., pending the completion of the Weber State match.
UTE NOTES:
The men's tennis team is looking to rebound after a loss to New Mexico (4-1) at the National Indoor Region Qualifier held last weekend in Boise, Idaho. Utah's Jason Smits was the only one to pull out a win in the contest. The Ute sophomore played at the No. 5 slot against Miles Bugby for a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION:
Weber State is currently 0-4 this season. The Wildcats have faced Idaho (L, 4-2), Portland (L, 7-0), Oregon (L, 6-1), and No. 68 BYU (L, 4-3). In the match against BYU, the Wildcat's Henning Hipp played at the No. 2 slot against Evan Urbina from the Cougars squad. Hipp pulled out a big win over the Cougar 5-7, 6-3, 7-6. In last year's dual match on Jan 27, 2007, the Utes walked away with a 5-2 win.
Utah State is 1-2 thus far in the season with a win over Montana State- Bozeman (4-3) last week. The Aggies earned the doubles point against the Grizzlies to get things started. In singles play, Jacob Asplund defeated MSU's Kyle McDonald at the No. 1 slot 7-6 (7-4), 6-1. Utah State has also faced BYU (L, 5-2) and No. 22 Boise State (L, 6-1). The Utes and Aggies last played a dual match on Jan 20, 2007, where the Utes took the contest at 6-1.
