SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (68) prepares to take on Boise State (25) in a home court brawl on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. MST. The Utes and the Varsity Club will be hosting the first annual Men's Tennis Alumni Luncheon prior to the match beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Eccles Tennis Center.
THE UTES
The men's tennis team currently holds a No. 68 national ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) which released their latest rankings on Tuesday.
The Utes are 2-1 after hosting a double-header last Saturday. The first dual match was against Weber State, where the Utes notched a 6-1 win. Utah State stepped in to face the Utes shortly after the end of that match. The Utes were too much for the Aggies, sweeping the match.
The Utes loss came from falling 1-4 to No. 53 New Mexico at the National Indoor Qualifier in Boise, Idaho earlier in January.
Last time the Utes and Broncos faced each other in a dual match setting was March 2007. Boise State, then ranked No. 19, swept the match 7-0 over the Utes.
"Boise State is one of the premier programs in the nation. They are well coached and have multiple options at each position," said assistant coach Roeland Brateanu. "We have a great opportunity at home with a great crowd to upset them. We need to play well at every single spot for us to have a chance at doing that though."
BOISE STATE BRONCOS
The team currently holds a No. 25 national ranking from the ITA with a 5-1 season record. The team's only loss is to No. 22 Texas A&M on January 27, where the Broncos fell 3-4.
The Broncos have sixteen members on their 2008 roster, four of which are Top 70 singles players: Clancy Shields (19), Luke Shields (47), Eric Roberson (65), and Brent Werbeck (69).
In doubles play, Eric Roberson and Paul Koenke have teamed up to earn a No. 41 national ranking.
AFTERNOON LUNCHEON
The University of Utah men's tennis team, along with the Varsity Club, will be hosting an alumni luncheon at Eccles Tennis Center prior to the match at 3:30 p.m. It is anticipated that more than 40 past members will be there to cheer on the current team.
"This year will be the first time that we are hosting a reunion like this. We think this is a big step for our program to attempt to bring back all former players and reconnect them with our program," said Brateanu. "Besides the fact that it will be a lot of fun for everyone, we think this is a great way to get support for the team. Of course we hope this will turn out to be a great success so we can build it up bigger and better each year."
