SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah senior All-America kicker/punter Louie Sakoda and sophomore defensive end Paul Kruger have been named to the 2008 CBSSports.com Midseason All-America Team. Utah was one of five schools (and the only non-BCS school) represented by two players.
Sakoda was also selected to the Rivals.com midseason team.
Sakoda, a first-team All-America punter a year ago by CBSSports.com and a first-team All-America kicker by Rivals.com, is the 2008 midseason pick as the nation's top kicker for both outlets. He leads the nation in kick-scoring points with 73 and is tied for first in the nation in made field goals (15-of-17). His only two misses were from a distance of 48 and 54 yards. Sakoda is also tied for first in the country with six made field goals from beyond 40 yards and two field goals beyond 50 yards. He is a perfect 12-of-12 in field goals from inside 48 yards. Sakoda is one of just six players at any position to score 70 points this season and ranks 10th in the nation (first in the MWC) in points per game (10.43). He has one game-winning field goal to his credit this season (a 37-yarder with 0:00 remaining in Utah's 31-28 win against Oregon State) and two in his career. He also ranks among the national punt leaders--averaging 43.4 yards per punt.
Kruger, one of five sophomores named to the CBSSports.com midseason team, is tied for first in the nation in tackles for loss (12.5). He also has 5.5 sacks, 34 total tackles, four pass breakups and two forced fumbles for the nation's seventh-ranked defense (Utah is allowing 259.14 yards per game).
The CBSSports.com Midseason All-America team was voted on by a panel of experts from the publication.
