SALT LAKE CITY - After leading Utah to a 9-0 start, head coach Kyle Whittingham has been named as a candidate for several national Coach of the Year awards. He is one of 15 semifinalists for the George Munger Award, one of 10 coaches on the watch list for the Dodd Trophy and one of 20 on the watch list for the Bryant College Coach of the Year Award.
The George Munger Award, presented by the Maxwell Football Club, is awarded based on coaching success, devotion to ethics in athletics and commitment to education. The winner will be selected in December and honored at the Maxwell Football Club's Awards Dinner on Friday, March 6 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
The Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation, which awards the Dodd Trophy, emphasizes a `belief that the game of football should be kept in perspective with college life in general.' The recipient will be announced on Dec. 31 during halftime of the Chick-fil-A Bowl.
The Paul `Bear' Bryant College Coach of the Year is voted on by members of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association and is the only college coaching award given after all the bowl games have finished. A list of finalists will be selected in December and the winner will be announced on Jan. 15.
Whittingham is 33-14 as the head coach at Utah, including a 3-0 record in bowl games. He is 6-3 against BCS schools. Since he joined the staff as a Ute assistant in 1994, Utah has won nearly 70-percent of its games (119-55). Utah has played in nine bowl games during Whittingham's tenure--winning eight. Prior to becoming Utah's head coach in 2005, he spent one season as the defensive line coach and 10 years as the defensive coordinator.
