Four Utes Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah quarterback Brian Johnson, kicker/punter Louie Sakoda, offensive tackle Zane Beadles and tight end Colt Sampson have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first-team, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
As first-team selections, they will be placed on the national ballot for Academic All-America honors.
Sakoda, a 2007 All-America kicker and punter who has a 3.73 GPA in business marketing, is a 2008 a Ray Guy top-10 and Lou Groza top-20 semifinalist. He was selected as the 2008 Midseason All-America placekicker by CBSSports.com, The Sporting News Today and Rivals.com. Sakoda is a Draddy Trophy finalist and a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete and is also a top-10 finalist for the Lowe's Senior Class Award. He has won a record 11 career MWC Special Teams Player of the Week awards (four this season) and is a two-time Lou Groza "Star of the Week."
Johnson owns a 3.34 GPA in mass communication and is the school record holder for most career wins by a starting Ute quarterback (22-7). Johnson, who ranks second in the MWC in pass efficiency (142.9), has led Utah to wins in 17 of its last 18 games.
Beadles, a mechanical engineering major with a 3.48 GPA, blocks for an offense that is ranked in the top 30 nationally in scoring, rushing and total offense. The junior tackle leads the team with 30 knockdowns and has 33 pancake blocks and 18 cuts.
Sampson, Utah's top receiving tight end, has a 3.39 GPA in parks, recreation and tourism He has seven catches for 68 yards and three touchdowns. Of his 12 career receptions, five have gone for touchdowns.
Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, a 2,000-member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
