SALT LAKE CITY - Utah senior guard Morgan Warburton has been selected as one of 30 candidates for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be a senior and have notable achievements in these areas: classroom, character, community, and competition.
An honorable mention All-American and two-time all-conference player, Warburton is leading the conference in scoring with 19.7 points per game. She is the only current player in the Mountain West Conference to have reached 1,000 career points. Her 1,472 points ranks seventh all-time at Utah and she has scored in double figures a MWC record 44 consecutive games. Warburton is also among the national leaders with a .909 free-throw percentage (40-of-44).
"Morgan carries a tremendous load as a leader on the team and embraces it rather than being frightened by it," head coach Elaine Elliott said. "She is the team leader and everyone looks to her for leadership and confidence. She has done everything asked of her without any complaints. Every bit of Morgan's basketball ability is matched by her character. She is an amazing individual."
A national media committee will select 10 finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in February 2009. Those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote.
