THIS WEEK:
The University of Utah Puttin' Utes head to sunny Hawaii to compete in the 32nd Annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Hawaii. The 54-hole tournament will be held at the Leilehua Golf Course in Schofield Barracks, Oahu. The golfers will play 18 holes each day from Feb. 20-22. Yardage for the par-72 tournament is set at 6,917 yards.
Last season, the Utes finished 17th at the Burns Invitational. Utah occupied 20th place after the first day of competition, before gradually moving up three spots. Chance Cota led the Utes, finishing tied for 38th at one-over. Dustin Pimm placed 44th at two-over-par, and Steve Broker tied for 52nd at three-over-par.
THE FIELD:
The field this week includes Arkansas, Arizona, Auburn, Brigham Young, California, UC Santa Barbara, Denver, Fresno State, Hawai`i, UH-Hilo, Long Beach State, Nagoya, Nevada, New Mexico, San Diego, San Diego State, San Jose State, Southern Methodist, Texas A&M, UNLV, Utah, UTEP. Brigham Young is the defending team champion, and SMU's Frank Wrenn is the defending individual champion. The varied field features schools from the SEC, Sun Belt, Pac 10, WAC, Big West, Mountain West, Conference USA and Big 12.
DIXIE DAWN:
The University of Utah kicked off their spring campaign Feb. 11-12 at the Pat Hick's Thunderbird Invitational in St. George, Utah. Chance Cota led the team, finishing at three-under-par, tying for 11th place. Cota fired rounds of 70 and 71 to complete the top finish of his career. Steve Broker was one-under-par and tied for 16th. After carding a first round of 76, Nic Larson turned in Utah's low round of the tournament with a 69 to finish at one-over.
UTE NOTES:
The Utes fifth-place finish at the Pat Hick's Invitational was the third time this season they have placed fifth in a tournament. The Utes also took fifth at the Tucker Invitational and the Wolf Pack Classic during their fall campaign ... The Burns Intercollegiate will be the only trip for the team outside the continental United States this season ... The Utes will resume play Mar. 10-11 at the Farms Collegiate.
