SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team hosted an alumni luncheon last month to connect Utah's former players with the current program. The event was originally built around the Boise State match on Feb. 2, but due to extreme weather conditions the match was canceled. The current men's tennis team instead played a few singles and doubles matches to show the alumni its talent.
"Personally, it was great seeing some of my former teammates again," said assistant coach Roeland Brateanu. "With everyone having their own lives now, it is tough to keep in touch. In that sense it is nice to re-live some good moments and be a team again. This luncheon was a big step for our program. It is always good to have the support from your former players. We hope to build on this first reunion and make it bigger, more fun and even more successful."
The first annual alumni luncheon successfully brought back forty former players and their families to Eccles Tennis Center. Rich Norland, The Varsity Club President, along with Doug Knuth, Assistant Athletic Director of Development, and Manny Hendrix, Director of Athletic Relations, came together to organize the event. Even though the actual match against top-ranked Boise State was canceled for that weekend, it was a good opportunity for the former and current tennis players and coaches to reconnect.
"The luncheon went well and everyone I talked to was really excited about it," said Varsity Club President Rich Norland. "We had a full meal planned out, but most people just wanted to talk and get together, which was nice. We now have an e-mail list that we collected from the luncheon to let the former players know when there are home matches. We have had a lot of good feedback, and look forward to doing this again."
