Las Cruces, N.M. - The University of Utah men's tennis team had a tough day on Saturday against New Mexico State. The Utes rallied for the doubles point to start off the match, but couldn't find their rhythm in singles play. The Aggies took the match at 6-1.
In doubles play, Zach Ganger and Miron Mann teamed up at the top spot to take on Roman Stoisavljevic and Eduardo Salas from the Aggies' squad. The Ute duo overpowed Stoisavljevic and Salas for an 8-3 win.
At No. 2 doubles, the Utes had a harder time sealing the deal. Stephen Jacobs filled in for Timmy Allin, whom is still out with a foot injury. Jacobs teamed up with Wes Hancock against Gustave Diep and Alejandro de Mucha. The Aggie duo challenged the Utes; however, Hancock and Jacobs battled back for an 8-5 victory.
Stepping in at No. 3 doubles, Jason Smits and Othman Zerouali-Ouariti battled against Jim Brouleau and Jeff Pfeifer. The Utes wanted to sweep doubles play, but couldn't hold on in the end. The Aggie duo took the win 8-6.
The Aggies swept singles play.
Quote from assistant coach Roeland Brateanu:
"After we won the doubles point, NMSU came out very strong and played tough in the singles matches. We struggled adjusting to the outdoor conditions and the lower altitude and we hope to do better tomorrow."
