UTE NOTES
Thursday's practice will be abbreviated (3:00-4:15 p.m.), with no tackling, to keep the players fresh for Friday's scrimmage ... The scrimmage will consist of 70-80 plays and will have a very similar format to the first scrimmage ... Among those singled out for praise in spring ball are redshirt freshman defenders Derrick Shelby, DE; Mo Neal, LB and Brandon Burton, DB. Shelby had a sack and Burton picked off two interceptions in last Saturday's scrimmage ... Junior Kenape Eliapo is getting a bead on the starting position at nose tackle during the injury-caused absence of sophomore Isley Filiaga (foot) ... Starting quarterback Brian Johnson will reduce his snap count this week to give his sore shoulder a chance to rest. It is still anticipated that Johnson will be at full strength for the start of fall camp ... Expected to return in non-contact drills is cornerback Terrell Cole (knee) ... Cornerback Damilyn Tanner, who suffered a blow to his elbow in the scrimmage last Saturday, is questionable for this week. X-rays of his elbow were negative... Receiver Bradon Godfrey (pelvic strain) is also questionable ... Coach Kyle Whittingham isn't taking any chances with his stars. He held most of his starting offensive skill players out of "live" action during last Saturday's scrimmage, and also confined seven defensive starters to "thud" drills (Eliapo, Paul Kruger, Koa Misi, Stevenson Sylvester, Mike Wright, Robert Johnson and Joe Dale).
A NUMBERS GAME
Some of the most impressive stats from the first spring scrimmage came from kickers Louie Sakoda and Ben Vroman, quarterback Corbin Louks and defensive tackle Lei Talamaivao. Sakoda made all six of his field goal attempts, including two 47-yarders and a 46-yard boot. Vroman was almost a good - drilling 4-of-6 field goal attempts - with his only misses coming from 61 yards out. Vroman also had a long make of 47 yards. Louks completed 11-of-16 pass attempts for 66 yards and rushed for a team-high 39 yards. Talamaivao had two sacks.
RED-WHITE SPRING GAME
The sixth-annual Red-White game will be held in Rice-Eccles Stadium on April 19 starting at 1 p.m. Admission and parking are free. Players will sign autographs after the game.
