Complete MWC 10th Anniversary Team
LAS VEGAS - Five former Ute football players were named to the Mountain West Conference 10th anniversary team, which was selected by a panel of media, institutional and conference representatives and fans. To be eligible for the award, candidates must have been a first team all-Mountain West selection at least once in their careers. Anniversary teams will be chosen for each of the 19 conference-sponsored sports during the 2008-09 seasons in celebration of the Mountain West's 10th anniversary.
Alex Smith, a Heisman Trophy finalist and the No. 1 NFL Draft pick, was selected as the MWC's all-decade quarterback. As a junior in 2004, Smith led Utah to a 12-0 season and helped Utah break the BCS barrier with a Fiesta Bowl berth. Smith was named the MWC Offensive Player of the Year, the Sports Illustrated National Player of the Year, a Davey O'Brien finalist and to several All-America teams.
Offensive tackle Jordan Gross was a 2002 Consensus All-American and an Outland Trophy finalist. Gross, the first offensive lineman taken in the 2003 NFL Draft and the No. 8 draft pick overall, has started for Carolina since his rookie year.
Defensive back Eric Weddle, a two-time MWC Defensive Player of the Year, was a Consensus All-American in 2006. Weddle was drafted in the second round by the San Diego Chargers - the highest MWC draft pick in 2007.
Steve Fifita, a two-time MWC defensive lineman (2004-05), was the Defensive MVP of the 2004 Fiesta Bowl. He went to Miami as a free agent - playing there in 2006-07 - and is now on the New England Patriots' roster.
Offensive lineman Doug Kaufusi made the all-conference first team in 2000 and 2001 and was a third-team All-American by the Sporting News in 2001.
