SALT LAKE CITY - Utah junior linebacker Stevenson Sylvester has been named to the pre-season watch list for the 2008 Butkus Award, which is given annually to the top linebacker in college football.
Sylvester, an honorable mention all-Mountain West Conference selection last year, was second on the team in both tackles (86) and tackles for loss (10). He also had three sacks.
The Butkus Award, instituted in 1985 and named in honor of Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus, is regarded as one of the elite individual honors in college football. The Butkus Award will be presented January 13, 2009, at the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame in Chicago.
Other Utah athletes who have been named to watch lists include Louie Sakoda (Ray Guy Award - punter) and Brian Johnson (Golden Arm Award - quarterback).
