Utah will wrap up its preseason football camp this week with two-a-days slated for Monday and Wednesday (one session will be a scrimmage) and single practices Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The football team will participate in the ninth-annual Ute Fan Fest on Saturday in Rice-Eccles Stadium. The Fan Fest, which features athletes and coaches from all of Utah's varsity teams, is scheduled for 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The football team plans to arrive at around noon after practice, lifting and lunch. TEAM CAPTAINS CHOSEN
Elected as offensive team captains were Brian Johnson and Robert Conley. Player-elected defensive captains are Stevenson Sylvester and Brice McCain. The coaches appoint the special teams captain and plan to do so on a rotating basis this fall. The first designated special teams captain is Louie Sakoda.
INSIDE THE HUDDLE
Senior running back Darrell Mack is alone at No. 1 this week. He shared the title with junior Matt Asiata for the first two weeks of camp ... Asiata returned to practice on Aug. 15 after missing four days with an injured ankle. He sat out of Saturday's scrimmage and will gradually return to full practice ... Defensive tackle Aaron Tonga is expected to miss another two weeks with a knee injury suffered last week in practice ... Freshman receiver Ryan Lacy will undergo surgery on both shoulders and will redshirt this season ... Junior Lisi Leota moved into No. 2 at stud linebacker last week when Mo Neal was sidelined with a swollen knee. Neal hopes to return to practice today ... Freshman defensive end Nick Binks, a 2006 signee who went on a church mission, joined the team on Aug. 13 ... Utah was ranked No. 16 in the preseason Playboy poll ... Junior Stevenson Sylvester has been named to the Butkus Award preseason watch list. The Butkus Award goes to the nation's top linebacker. Other Utes who have been named to preseason watch lists to date are punter Louie Sakoda (Ray Guy Award) and quarterback Brian Johnson (Golden Arm Award).
