SALT LAKE CITY - Utah running back Darrell Mack has been selected as a candidate for the 2008 Doak Walker Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top college running back.
Last year Mack became just the ninth 1,000-yard rusher in school history en route to earning second-team all-conference honors. His 1,204 net yards in 2007 is the third-most in a season by a Ute, despite missing the first game of the year. Mack finished the year second in the Mountain West Conference and 33rd in the nation in rushing (100.3 yards per game). His 12 rushing touchdowns also ranked as the third-most in a season at Utah.
The candidates will be narrowed down to semifinalists on November 10. The recipient of the 2008 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on ESPN on The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards on Thursday, December 11.
The award, in its 19th year, is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker.
