SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah men's tennis team (1-0) defeated Eastern Washington in their first dual match of the season on Friday, 6-1. Junior Othman Ouariti delivered the clinching point from the No. 5 singles position defeating Daniel Pez, 6-3, 6-3.
"It is good to get a win under our belt and to start the season 1-0," said assistant coach Roeland Brateanu. "We'll have to work on some stuff and get back on the court for Monday's double header against Utah state and Weber State."
The Utes swept the doubles competition earning the first point of the match. Wes Hancock and Timmy Allin played at the No. 1 position defeating Kyle Schraeder and Nico Riego de Dios, 8-6. The No. 2 spot clinched the doubles point for Utah, as Phillip Eilers and John Taylor topped Kenneth Norling and Art Karas, 8-5. Benito Suriano and Othman Ouariti won at the No. 3 position defeating Daniel Pez and Kevin Anderson, 8-4.
In singles action, John Taylor earned Utah's second point of the evening winning against Norling, 6-3, 6-1, continuing the Utes lead, 2-0. Allin continued the lead beating Kevin Anderson, 6-3, 6-2, setting up Othman to clinch the match putting the Utes up 4-0.
In No. 1 singles, Eilers defeated Schraeder in two straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Hancock won at the No. 2 position against Riego De Dios, 6-2, 7-6(5), while Suriano was defeated by Karas in a tie-breaker, 6-4, 6-7(8), 10-8.
Up next, Utah will face Weber State and Utah State in a double-header Jan. 19 beginning at 11 a.m. at the Eccles Tennis Center.
