SALT LAKE CITY -
Aaron Roderick and Dave Schramm have been appointed as co-offensive coordinators at the University of Utah, head coach Kyle Whittingham announced today. Roderick and Schramm are originals members of Whittingham's staff, with Roderick coaching the receivers for the past four years and Schramm coaching the running backs. Schramm will remain Utah's recruiting coordinator in his new job.
Roderick will now coach the quarterbacks and coordinate the passing game along with handling the play calling duties on game day. Schramm will serve as the run game coordinator while continuing in his role as the running backs coach. In the coming weeks, Whittingham will complete his staff by hiring two more offensive assistants. Earlier, he promoted linebacker coach Kalani Sitake to defensive coordinator and hired John Pease to coach the defensive line. As was the case on the defensive side, he chose to stay in-house when filling the offensive coordinator opening.
"Aaron and Dave have already been very involved in our game planning and play calling," said Whittingham. "To keep good coaches in your program, you need to be ready to advance them when opportunities come along. Aaron and Dave are outstanding coaches and they both have a lot to offer to the program. They work very well together and they are ready to direct our offense as the co-coordinators."
Utah led the league and finished 15th in the nation in scoring offense this season, averaging 36.9 points per game. The Utes ranked third in the MWC in passing offense (244.5). Senior receiver Freddie Brown, who averaged 109 yards in the last four games, including 125 yards against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, was named to the all-Mountain West Conference second team. The Utes averaged 156.5 yards rushing in 2008 and leading rusher Matt Asiata (707 yards, 12 touchdowns) will return next year as a senior.
Roderick was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Southern Utah for two years (2003-04) before joining Whittingham's staff as the receivers coach in 2005. His 2004 SUU team set a school record by averaging 270.5 passing yards per game and the Thunderbirds ranked No. 21 in the nation that year among FCS teams in total offense, averaging 412.5 yards. While at Utah, he has coached two second-team all-league receivers in Brown (2008) and Brent Casteel (2006), and the MVP of the 2005 Emerald Bowl, Travis LaTendresse.
Schramm has coached two 1,000-yard rushers in his first four years at Utah--Quinton Ganther (now with the Tennessee Titans) in 2005, and Darrell Mack in 2007. Prior to Schramm, Utah had just seven 1,000-yard rushers in its history. Schramm has 21years of college coaching experience at Austin Peay, Nebraska, San Diego State, Southwest Texas State, Montana and Utah.
