Utah Men's Tennis Drops Match To San Diego State

WACO, Texas- The University of Utah men's tennis team (3-2) fell to No. 57 San Diego State (1-2), 5-1. Senior Wes Hancock delivered the only win for the Utes defeating Achim Ceban, 6-4, 6-4, in the No. 2 position.

The Aztecs began by winning the first point of the day in doubles. Juan Gomez and T. Schulz van Endert won the first match in the No. 2 position against Utes Hancock and Timmy Allin, 8-1.

Clinching the doubles point was the No. 3 doubles team of Bartos Golas and Andre Feliz topping Stephen Jacobs and Jason Smits, 8-5. The match in the No. 1 spot was unfinished between the Ute duo of Phillip Eilers and John Taylor who competed against Achim Ceban and Giovanni Vaglietti.

In singles, Schulz van Endert continued the Aztecs lead defeating Allin in the No. 6 position, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. After the win by Hancock the Utes were down, 2-1, when SDSU delivered another win in the No. 3 spot. Juan Gomez topped Benito Suriano, 6-4, 6-1, putting the Aztecs up by two, needing one point to clinch the match.

In the No. 4 position Viglietti delivered the winning point for SDSU defeating Othman Zerouali-Ouariti, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4. Timmy Allin took Andre Feliz to three sets, falling in the third set, 6-2.

The match in the No. 1 spot went unfinished between Eilers and Bartos Golas.

The Utes will make their next appearance at home Feb. 11 against Idaho State at the Eccles Tennis Center beginning at 5 p.m.
