SALT LAKE CITY- The No. 67 University of Utah men's tennis team (5-2) will travel to southern California for two road matches this weekend. The Utes will face No. 58 UC Santa Barbara (2-4) in Santa Barbara, Calif. on Friday, Feb. 20, and then travel to Irvine, Cali. to take on No. 69 UC Irvine (0-3) on Sunday.
"This weekend will be a good test for our team," said assistant coach Roeland Brateanu. "We will play two very tough teams in UCSB and UCI. Two teams that we had very close matches with last year at home. This is an opportunity for our players to showcase that they are capable of dealing with low altitude and outdoor conditions and to show that we have learned from our road trip to Waco, TX earlier this year."
Last year Utah played both UCSB and UCI in close matches at home losing to UCSB, 3-4, and winning against UCI, 4-3.
This year UCSB has posted wins over UC Davis and Oregon with losses against, No. 30 Boise State, No. 44 New Mexico, No. 2 Texas, and No. 37 Southern Florida. UCI is coming off losses against UNLV, No. 20 Pepperdine, and No. 65 BYU.
The Utes have compiled a 5-0 record in the No. 1 doubles spot and is 5-2 in both the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Utah currently has their best singles record 6-1in the No. 2 spot.
Utah is 0-2 on the road losing to Baylor and San Diego State at the ITA National Team Indoor Qualifying. Since their last road trip Utah has captured two, 7-0, wins at home against Idaho State and Northern Arizona.
