HONOLULU, Hawaii - The University of Utah softball team fell to Memphis, 5-1, and Hawaii, 1-0, Wednesday in the first day of the Chevron Spring Fling at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Freshman third baseman Whitney Holm drove in her 19th run of the season in the sixth inning against Memphis in the first game of the day. Sophomore Brittany Parker and Lindsey Palmer combined on a one-hitter, but unfortunately fell to the Rainbow Wahine, 1-0, in the final contest of the day.
Utah (10-17) outhit Memphis 8-5, but unfortunately, the Utes committed three errors, while the Tigers did not have a single error in the field on the day. Holm drove in Utah's run, while junior center fielder Kara Foster and senior right fielder Angie Boardman both came up with multiple-hit-efforts by going 2-for-3 on the day at the plate.
Junior Ashley Smuda got the start and pitched 3.1 innings without allowing an earned run and giving up only one hit while striking out three. Joni Cook finished the game by pitching 2.2 innings, allowing three earned runs with one strikeout and one walk.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard first in the fourth inning when Vanessa Walle reached on a Ute error while Leandra Hines scored. Hines scored another run for Memphis in the fifth frame when Walle reached on the Utes' second miscue of the game.
Utah sophomore catcher Brooke Olson led off the sixth inning and got hit by a pitch then reached third base after a single up the middle by Foster. After Staci Hemingway was hit by a pitch, too, Holm hit a single through the left side of the Tiger infield for a Utah run.
Memphis built its cushion with three runs in the sixth inning after Kamri Chester led off with a double down the left-field line then was driven in by Maddie McKinley. Lelani Bernardino tripled down the right-field line to drive in Jessica Phillips, and then Leigh Rowan came through with the third extra-base-hit to plate Bernardino.
Hawaii 1, Utah 0
Parker got the start and pitched 3.2 inning, allowing only one earned run on one hit, while striking out five and walking six. Palmer pitched the final 2.1 innings, striking out two with one walk.
The two teams combined for two hits. Utah senior right fielder Angie Boardman came up with a single up the middle of the Hawaii defense in the top of the third inning.
Hawaii got the only run of the game in the fourth inning Audrey Andrade reached on a walk then took second base after Richie-Anne Titcomb singled to right field. The Rainbow Wahine then drew two more walks to push Andrade across the plate for the lone run of the game.
Utah continues its Chevron Spring Fling schedule by taking on the Radford Highlanders Thursday at 11 a.m. HT. at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
