SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 62-ranked University of Utah men's tennis team (10-6) will host two matches this weekend beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, March 27 against Montana State (8-6). Their second match against Loyola Marymount (1-11) will be Saturday at 4 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Eccles Tennis Center.
"Montana State is a strong and enthusiastic team," said assistant coach Roeland Brateanu. "They are a tough regional team and we will have to play some good tennis in order to get the win. Loyola Marymount is having a tough season, but they are a very talented and good team. So far they have played every match very close and it is just a matter of time before they start turning things around."
Last year's match against Montana State ended by the Utes sweeping the Bobcats, 7-0. The Bobcats have taken matches against two top 20 ranked opponents this year, No. 5 Azusa Pacific University and No. 17 Lewis-Clark State College (Idaho).
The last time Utah met Loyola Marymount was in 2006 when the Utes won, 7-0. This year the Lions have posted one win to their record against Montana State, 4-3.
Utah is coming off of a 2-2 road trip to San Diego, Calif. posting wins over San Diego and Yale while falling to Pacific and Princeton. The Utes remain undefeated on their home courts with a 6-0 record.
The No. 1 doubles team of Phillip Eilers and Wes Hancock are on a seven match winning streak and have earned a 9-1 dual match doubles record. In singles Timmy Allin is on a six match winning streak in the No. 6 position and has a 9-2 dual match singles record.
Utah is 13-1 in the No. 1 doubles spot and has their best singles record in the No. 2 slot going 12-4.
