SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 46th-ranked University of Utah men's tennis team (16-8, 4-2 MWC) lost their opportunity to clinch the Mountain West Conference title falling to No. 38th-ranked San Diego State (13-10, 1-2 MWC), 6-1.
In No. 1 doubles Wes Hancock and Phillip Eilers were defeated by Achim Ceban and Juan Gomez, 8-3. Timmy Allin and John Taylor fell to Tim Schulz van Endert and Jordan Coleman, 9-7, in the No. 2 position, SDSU earning the doubles point.
Benito Suriano and Stephen Jacobs had an, 8-6, win over Giovanni Vaglietti and Andre Feliz from the No. 3 slot.
The Aztecs continued their victories in singles with Taylor falling to Feliz, 6-4, 6-1, in the No. 4 position. In the No. 3 spot Suriano was defeated by Vaglietti, 6-3, 6-1, allowing SDSU to clinch the match at, 4-0, in the No. 1 spot with Hancock falling to Ceban, 7-6(4), 6-1.
In the No. 5 slot Jason Smits was defeated by Schulz van Endert, 6-0, 6-2, following Eilers' defeat by Gomez from the No. 2 position, 6-4, 6-3. The Utes earned their only point at the No. 6 spot Allin topped Colman, 6-7(4), 6-4, 10-8.
The Utes concluded regular season MWC play and will be back in action at the MWC Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. with the quarterfinal round beginning April 23.
