SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 46-ranked University of Utah men's tennis team (15-6. 3-0) wraps up conference play in San Diego, Calif. against Air Force (7-14, 0-2), No. 41-ranked New Mexico (15-3. 2-0), and No. 38-ranked San Diego State (12-8), April 9-11.
"We had a very good weekend to start the conference last weekend," commented assistant coach Roeland Brateanu. "We hope we can keep the momentum we gained. It will be a very tough weekend against formidable opponents, but if we compete well good things can happen."
The Utes are on a five game winning streak against Air Force and have swept the Falcons, 7-0, the past two years. This year they have fallen to conference opponents New Mexico, 6-1, and UNLV, 7-0.
New Mexico has posted two wins over MWC opponents this year, Air Force, 6-1, and UNLV, 5-2. The Lobos have a two game winning streak over the Utes during conference play, with a close, 4-3, match last year. The New Mexico shared the regular season conference title with Utah and TCU in a three-way tie last year.
Utah played San Diego State earlier this season falling, 5-1, to the Aztecs in Baylor, Texas. During conference play last year the Utes defeated SDSU, 5-2, before losing, 4-2, in the MWC tournament quarterfinals.
This weekend marks Utah's final matches of the season before the MWC tournament begins in Albuquerque, N. M. The quarter final round begins April 23 with the semi final and final rounds on April 24-25, respectively.
